Currently, I’m a fans of earphone, not IEM, which is a kind of new trend
Why? bloated with bass is common IEM characteristics. Well, a few I’ve tried is not. But now I’m still happy with my Creative EP-630 IEM a.k.a Sennheiser CX-300 rebranded.
A week ago, someone give me a chance to try the Grado SR80i headphones. Well, I’m not a big fans of headphone too, why? low isolation level
Just a personal opinion
But i know most of headphone even the low end one will sound better than earphone at the same price (I’m not saying a hundred/thousand dollar stuff okei?). Why? Simply because of “bigger driver”. Usually, it will be more responsive, lower, brighter, etc.
The Grado SR80i specifications, as on this link ;
SR80i
Features:
Vented diaphragm
Non Resonant air chamber
Standard copper voice coil wire
Standard copper connecting cord
mini plug with 1/4″ adaptor
Tranducer type dynamic
Operating principle open air
Frequency Response 20-20
SPL 1mW 98
Normal Impedance 32ohms
Driver matched db.1
What does the i stand for in the new SR80i from Grado? Improved, that’s what! Built on the same features as theSR60i, but SR80i utilizes a 4 conductor connecting cable and the diaphragms are put through a special ‘de-stressing’ process in order to enhance inner detail, the result of which gives a more open stage. The new SR80i has an upgraded driver design, and they have enlarged and improved the mass distribution in the plastic housing. The way the SR80i’s new driver and plastic housing move air and react to sound vibrations are now less affected by transient distortions. The SR80 provides an improved bass resonance, which enhances the overall detail. With the SR80i you will notice improved control of the upper and lower range of the frequency spectrum with both better supporting Grado’s world renowned midrange. The SR80i will produce a sound that is pure Grado, warm harmonic color, rich full bodied vocals, excellent dynamics and an ultra smooth top end. Listen and Enjoy!

Now back to the earphone itself. I dont like the material they use. everything feel to OEM-ish. Like they buy this stuff from some great chinese manufacturer and rebranding it, and if it hit the market pretty well, a lot of brand will sell the same stuff too with a different brand off course
The Headphone plastic housing is too plasticky, the “leather” that covering the head band is too cheapo, the finishing is so-so. Well, they sell the sound not the looks right? well you know what to buy if you wanna buy a looks
Contrary the cable is great, the sleeving is nice, and really show this is a good headphone, the jack built quality is great, the splitter is tough enough to stand against any impact :p. The headphone foam is quite nice. Dense enough.
Overall, design is good actually. Unique. And a trademark of grado headphone
The Sound
I don’t know if this headphone is burn-in yet. But very first time I hear this headphone is really “forward” and really-really dynamic. Everything is really smooth. A pleasure for the ear.
Test it on iPod Nano 6th gen + Fiio E1 amp + a few WAV music. Again the mid is really shiney. So shine like it come from a big home audiophile speaker. The treble? I love it. Everything is so nice, click, right, no analytical, no harsh, really-really nice. Bass? Woho, this is why a lot of reviewers out there giving a recomended point. Not bloated, you can even hear the slightest miss from contra bass/fretless. Everything is good, rich, full.
What is the minus? I personally said, a bit lack of clarity. just a bit (well I’m picky here :p) and the staging is not really “wide”.. Trying to connect it to a PC with Asus Xonar Essence STX (no eq, watsoever turn ON) and foobar player and same audio file. The sound quality is better, wider, clarity a bit improved, even I feel its like too analytical. Maybe because of the characteristics of the SoundCard
And because of the nature of open-air design no isolation at all
Trust me if you are looking for a great headphone at this price, This one will be a good one.
